Up, Up and Away

We've decided to start a list of things we would like to do in our lifetime, even if they seem outrageous and implausible. Some people might make this list before these events take place so that they become goals - something to work toward, like a trip to Europe or competing in a marathon. We, on the other hand, are creating our list because an opportunity arose this weekend that we wouldn't have thought to put on our list if we had one in the first place: we got to ride in a blimp. Seriously.

The story: last week, Casey called in to a local radio station while he was waiting in his car for me to meet him. The station was playing a game called "What the heck is that sound?" in which they played a random noise and let people guess what it was. Since Casey had a little time to kill, he decided to try his luck. The sound? A can of compressed air, and Casey got it right! We always knew he was the definitive authority on whizzing air noises. That's my baby. The prize? A gift certificate to the Outback Steakhouse and a chance to win a ride in the Outback Steakhouse blimp. A few days after the initial win, they called us up and offered us the ride!

The following pictures show some of the aerial shots we could see from about 1,000 feet off the ground. If you are interested in the mechanical aspects of the blimp, please let Casey know, because he would LOVE to discuss it with you (he sat in the front to get a better view of all the instruments and to chat with the pilot about the technical stuff). The ride was fun, but after an hour of a rocking motion not unlike being on a ship (the correct name for a blimp is "airship" for that very reason - the motion is like a boat on the water) we both got a little bit motion sick and were ready to be back on the ground. It's a good thing Gavin wasn't allowed to go, too, because he would have gone crazy just sitting still for an hour in 100-degree heat (no kidding - it was very hot).

This was one of the most random events in our lives, and although it was an "experience," we can now check it off the list (after we begin our list, of course) and never do it again!

Blimps: just as invasive as Google Earth.

He looks like he's wearing a souvenir hat
